The Jayhawk State Theatre of Kansas was built in 1926. Its architects, the
Williamson brothers used the structure as a template for their later theatres.
For decades, Topekans and people from all around came here to enjoy the
air-conditioned luxury of this innovative entertainment palace. It was the
first theatre of its kind west of the Mississippi river.
After many years of grandeur the theatre was marked
for demolition, but purchased by concerned Topekans
intent on preserving this important historic landmark.
Today the theatre is listed as a historic
landmark, and is being renovated. With
enough public backing, we can raise the
money needed to complete the renovation
project in just a few years.
